Behavioral Relationships

Tokays are Solitary, nocturnal creatures who set up territories that are protected by a male and occasionally watched over by a female

They form Polygyny populations where one male mates with several females.

Tokays will eat anything they can catch and chew.  In a captive enviroment, Tokays will eat crickets, pinkey mice, and small lizards

Defenses include a barking warning that the Tokay gives off before biting.  The Tokay will readily bite and bite hard.

The casting off of the tail  is another defense.  The tail thrashes violently for several minutes to distract the predator and give the gecko a chance to get away.  The tail regenerates in about 3 weeks although it is never as long or as ornate as the original

Tokays do not like to be handled and will bite the hand that feeds it!  I have been told that captive born Tokays can be tamed and get use to being held, however, mine never did.  Tokay Geckoes are for the person who enjoys watching but not touching their pets.  But what a display these critters give those who are able to watch these agile hunters move through the darkness of their terrarium!
